Things to do around Lake LBJ and Hill Country

  • Boating & Floating right from your backyard!
    • The upper Llano arm Lake LBJ is one of the BEST places on all the Highland Lake chain to boat, float, kayak, paddleboard and fish.
    • Splash Boat Rentals is one minute away (you can walk to it). In addition to ski and pontoon boats, they also rent a wide variety of water toys such as PWC's, paddleboards, kayaks and other fun, on-the-water, toys.
  • Wineries!!
    • Perissos Vineyard & Winery: One of our favorite! Seth and Laura Martin run one of the best and most hospitable wineries/vineyard in the Hill Country, and it's just 10 minutes away.
    • Torr Na Lochs Vineyard & Winery: Excellent wine and truly the best view of ANY winery in the Hill Country. It's also very close, just 15 minutes away
    • William & Chris Vineyards: Head toward Fredericksburg on US Hwy 290 for a seemingly endless string of top-notch vineyards. William & Chris Vineyards in Hye is one of our top-picks.
  • Outings:
    • Longhorn Caverns State Park is about 18 minutes away. In addition to the tours of the caverns, there are nature hiking trails as well. It's a a great example of "CCC" projects that were constructed in the 1930's.
    • "The Slab": Just up the the Llano River Arm of Lake LBJ is "The Slab". It's where the Llano River flows right before entering Lake LBJ. It offers fantastic hiking across a solid granite riverbed which is fully exposed in many places.
    • Enchanted Rock State Natural Area massive pink granite dome rising above Central Texas has drawn people for thousands of years. You can hike, backpack, camp, rock climb, picnic, bird, study nature, geocache and stargaze.
    • The Exotic Resort Zoo is out towards Johnson City and currently has 700+ total animals, and 45+ species on their free-roaming safari park.
    • The Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, otherwise know as the Western Whitehouse tells the story of our 36th President beginning with his ancestors until his final resting place on his beloved LBJ Ranch. There is also an active "period" farm here, the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm showing how people lived in the late 1800's in the Hill Country.
    • The Science Mill is a hands-on science museum located in Johnson City, located in a renovated 1800's grist mill. It offers a fantastic array of science exhibits and demonstrations that will fascinate and involve both children and adults alike.
    • Hill Country Motorheads in Burnet is a motorcycle museum that is second to none. Hill Country Motorheads is not your typical antique motorcycle museum. With over 200 motorcycles in the collection, the museum regularly showcases more than 70 bikes of many brands from around the world (it's one of my favorite places to visit regularly!!).
    • Fredericksburg is a GREAT day trip offering an incredible array of things to do and see. As a well-known tourist destination, it has fantastic shopping as well as hosting the National Museum of the Pacific War.
